Dr. Jaime Opinion, Tacloban City Health Officer, explains that if left undiagnosed and untreated, a person with tuberculosis can infect 20 others. Typhoon Haiyan damaged most of the public hospitals and health units along its path, directly hitting the government’s capability to address the rising health and medical needs of the affected population. The risk of spreading communicable diseases such as tuberculosis further increased in this environment. A U.S.-funded two-storey building that will serve as a dedicated tuberculosis treatment center at the Tacloban City Health Office grounds is scheduled to be completed this December. It is expected to benefit thousands of residents from 45 barangays. The U.S. Government, through USAID Rebuild, is working with the Department of Health and local government units to restore access to health services by constructing and furnishing 10 health facilities in the hardest-hit areas of Tacloban City and Leyte Province.
