Dr Jim Richards The paradox of the grace message is responsibility. While many people accused Paul of encouraging sin because he rejected law and preached grace, actually the very opposite was true. Law provides all kinds of excuses for sin. Grace, on the other hand, strips us of every excuse. The person in the New Covenant that yields to sin can only admit to unbelief or choice; both of which get down to personal responsibility. Nothing scares a person more than responsibility. Personal responsibility, however, is the only pathway to freedom. Personal responsibility says, “I must believe God and depend on the Holy Spirit to make this work.” The natural-minded (carnal) person cannot, however, relate to the real issues of faith (faith righteousness). The carnal-minded person cannot accept righteousness as a free gift because he sees righteousness as a work of the flesh. The following scriptures explain the dilemma of the person who sees righteousness as an effort of the flesh: For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
