Dr. Joan Marie Willingham Worthington, DO, 57, died September 26, 2014, in Thomasville, Georgia. She was born on September 28, 1956, in Atlanta (Fulton County), Georgia to the late John D. Willingham, Jr. and Edna Ann Jones Willingham. Joan grew up in Buckhead, Georgia and attended high school at North Fulton. She attended the University of Florida for two years before transferring to Georgia State University to receive her degree in Physical Therapy. She attended West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine, graduating as a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine in 1989. Joan currently held the position of Physician of Students at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida. Before working for FSU, she worked at Primary Care SW Georgia in Thomasville, Georgia and Rainelle West Virginia Medical Center. Being an avid outdoors person, Joan loved horses, horseback riding, exercising, jogging, kayaking, hiking, camping and bird watching. Joan was talented in the music area, playing the guitar and banjo. She was also an accomplished artist in the medium of drawing and painting. Joan was a member of the American Osteopathic Association. Joan is preceded in death by both of her parents and her daughter, Laura Kate Worthington. Joan is survived by her daughter, Jessica Ann Worthington of Athens, Georgia, her brother, John D. Willingham, III, of Ormond Beach, Florida and Fayetteville, Georgia, the father of her children, Joseph William (Bill) Worthington of Zackary, Louisiana and her close friend and fiancé, Jimmy Chastain of Thomasville, Georgia. A Visitation with family and friends will be held on Thursday, October 2, 2014, from 6:00 – 7:00 PM, at Baldwin Funeral Home, 50 Charles Overby Dr., in Richland, GA, with a Memorial Service starting at 7:00 PM. A Graveside Service will be held on Friday, October 3, 2014, at 2:00 PM, at Northside Cemetery, Cherry St., Lumpkin, GA. Joan was a people person that loved people, especially her patients. She will be greatly missed by all the people that knew her, either through her medical life or personal life. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to: Lumpkin Northside Cemetery Fund.
