Dr John Kennedy presented two posters at the recent Southeastern Surgical Conference held in Savannah GA, both relating to breast cancer. The first detailed his results in using his customized surgical instrument for lumpectomy for breast cancer. Using this technique, only 3% of patients over the past 4 years required a return to the operating room on account of positive margins. Nationally the re-excision rate is >20%. The second poster evaluated results with partial breast irradiation therapy, and concluded that it is an acceptable option both for Caucasian and African American patients, with comparably low recurrence rates (about 5% at median followup of 4 years). His research was supported by a Distinguished Clinical Scholar grant from the Georgia Cancer Coalition.
