Dr Kwado Afari-Gyan In all of this, let us not forget Dr. Kwado Afari-Gyan, the man who for the last 20 years has served his nation the best way he could possibly ever know how. I think it is not easy to occupy such a sensitive position as Chairman of the Electoral Commission for 20 years and not run into trouble except in your final year. But what a better way to retire than to have the Supreme Court overwhelmingly pass a vote of confidence on your work! May be if all put aside our political biases; may be if we all reflected deeply on all the elections Dr. Afari-Gyan has organized over the years, including by-elections, district assembly elections and all that we would realize that the man may not be a bad civil servant after all. For those of us who always complain that this country is not worth dying for, maybe we should try and put ourselves in the shoes of Dr. Afari-Gyan! If I had my way, I would recommend a National Honour for Dr. Afari-Gyan. I am yet to hear of any other electoral commissioner on the African continent who has been at post for 20 years with such an impeccable record. I think we should be careful the way we bad-mouth people who put themselves up for public office, even if we disagree with them. Without mincing words, I think Dr. Afari-Gyan deserves national honours! Let us celebrate him while he is alive. If we all sincerely believe in our hearts, that Ghana’s democracy won yesterday, then there is no way we can celebrate our democracy without celebrating Dr. Kwado Afari-Gyan!
