Dr. Larry B. Craycraft was the very first physician I ever met who - TopicsExpress

Dr. Larry B. Craycraft was the very first physician I ever met who truly showed that there were many differences in doctors. I had been to several as a child, and going to the doctor was something I absolutely dreaded even when I was so sick I thought I was dying. I saw Dr. Craycraft the first few times for sore throats and fevers, but when I saw him as a teenager after having contracted mononucleosis, I knew he was special. His kindnesses and care for a teenager who was distraught with all the comments surrounding this illness was spectacular. I had just returned from Beta Convention, the trip to Louisville that all of us had looked forward to since we were inducted into Beta Club, and like others I had one of those significant others who remained in Ashland. The comments were excruciating and the illness was devastating. I remember sitting in his office when diagnosed this illness, and on top of feeling miserable, the tears started falling because there was another student at Beta Convention who also had that illness. What made it even worse was that it was a boy. Now you put that together in a high school with all those little quirky relationships going on and for me, it was devastating. I got an incredibly painful shot that day, and when I stood up to leave that office I nearly passed out. Dr. Craycraft had me sit down until I felt like trying it again. I walked to the car slowly and remember laying in the back seat all the way home. The restrictions on life were horrendous for an active teenager. I remember nothing, absolutely nothing tasted good at all, and the only thing that I really liked were those oranges momma would peel and slice and sprinkle with sugar. Dr. Craycraft saw me through this illness, came emergently to the ER at KDH when I had a car accident and rolled my car on the old road on the hill above AK Steel, talked with me about birth control before making that big step into marriage, and I was devastated when he chose industrial medicine and closed his family practice. May you rest in peace Dr. Craycraft; you were truly a wonderful physician and I love you!
