Dr MC Gupta says to doctors - As a matter of fact, knowledge n skills of a professional increase as he gets older and more experienced in his profession. That would apply to a surgeon as well as to a lawyer. My consultation fee was Rs. 5500/- till lasr month. I have raised it to 6600/- now. I started with 500/-. My friend advocate, who joined the bar along with me and is an AOR, charges 11000/-. Senior advocates charge 40-60,000/- per briefing (where the clients advocate alone is present without the client). I have been saying repeatedly--If we dont value ourselves, why should others value us? My frequent references to quackery are in this context. If the IMA etc. are not worried about the devaluation of the MBBS degree (as evidenced by their not challenging government notifications allowing AYUSH to practice allopathy), there is no reason why the public should respect us. The prestige of the medical profession cannot be restored without waging a war against quackery. The next war should be for emoluments paid by the government to doctors. At present, a professor of literature taking 5 lectures a week in a university gets the same salary as a professor of medicine doing lot of emergency work round the clock. Why should that be so? But it will be so unless the professors themselves dont demand parity of pay in terms of hours per day / month spent on official work. As long as they continue to brainwash themselves with the idea that, because they belong to a noble and divine profession, they are not supposed to earn, they will continue to be treated at par with an MA, PhD as regards professorial pay scales. --M C Gupta
