Dr. Macura answers: What is radiologic oncology? Radiation oncology is a medical field dedicated to treating cancer using radiation therapy methods. Radiation therapy uses high-energy rays or particles to kill cancer cells. In prostate cancer, radiation may be used for the initial treatment of cancer that is still confined within the prostate gland, as one of the methods in the primary treatment (along with hormone therapy) for cancers that have grown outside of the prostate gland invading into neighboring tissues, when cancer is not completely removed or recurs after surgery in the pelvis, and when the cancer is advanced and the tumor needs to be reduced in size and to provide relief from symptoms. Katarzyna J. Macura, M.D., Ph.D., FACR, is an Associate Professor in the Johns Hopkins Medicine Medicine Department of Radiology and Radiological Science, as well as an Associate Professor Johns Hopkins University of both Oncology and Urology. talkabouthealth/what-is-radiologic-oncology
