Dr Matt ffytche, Deputy Director of the Centre for Psychoanalytic Studies, has been awarded a Mid-Career Research Fellowship by the Independent Social Research Foundation (ISRF). The ISRF supports original interdisciplinary research in the social sciences, its goal being to contribute to the development of new approaches to real-life problems in the social world. Matt ffytche’s project will explore the way two key terms in contemporary psychoanalysis are conceptualised and applied in social settings: one is the ‘transgenerational transmission of trauma’, the other is ‘projective identification’. Both have been frequently employed in psychosocial research over the last decade, particularly in the study of prejudice, racism and war. However, both also meet with resistance as they give rise to a notion of ‘transindividual processes’ – thoughts and feelings transferred from one person’s mind to another – that are hard to conceptualise and integrate with conventional assumptions about personhood in social theory. The project returns to neglected strands of social theory from the early twentieth century to build bridges between psychoanalytic and sociological approaches and to develop alternative descriptive models of transindividual processes. The fellowship will be held for one year beginning in October 2014. isrf.org/about/ ~Christian
