Dr. Michael Hendryx, formerly of WVU, and now professor of Applied Health Science at Indiana University, Bloomington, has co-authored the majority of the studies of the health impacts of mountaintop removal mining. This is an interesting interview he gave to PRIs Living on Earth radio program. You can listen to the 6 and a half minute long interview or read the transcript at the link below. In this study, we collected the dust samples within a mile of an active mountaintop removal mining site. In other studies that weve done we found evidence for elevations in particulate matter in the air within two or three miles. We dont know exactly what the progression would be as you move away from the mining, but I suspect that most of the effects are probably within five to 10 miles of active mining. Thousands of people live within 5 miles of the KD#2 mine. If fact, the WV state capitol dome is within 5 miles of the KD#2 mine. And cancer isnt the only elevated risk. Living near an MTR mine also puts us at greater risk of heart disease, birth defects, autism, lung disease...
