Dr. Michael Pare about why honesty is not always the best - TopicsExpress

Dr. Michael Pare about why honesty is not always the best thing! Our parents taught us to always tell the truth and we were punished if caught lying but this mind-conditioning should be overcome and employ rather kindness and tact (those who have tact,I dont have it and such I have hurt people that I loved). Fragment from The Medical Post They say honesty is the best policy; yet that saying would probably only hold true in a utopia. Alternatively, we could claim that honesty is always the best policy, yet absolute (naïve) truthfulness is not. We were taught growing up that we should always tell the truth and were likely threatened with punishment if caught lying. Fear of that alone could certainly compel one to remain truthful. We also value the virtue of honesty, as we do compassion, courage, and justice, for example. As we grow up with these reasonable ideals, we come to know there are several grey areas in life. Sometimes being brutally honest must be carefully avoided, and instead we find diplomacy, tactfulness, and prudence the best approaches to take. Where does the realization come from that not being entirely truthful is not so much lying as being constructively diplomatic? It relates to the vast complexity of social interactions and emotional responses. It is an essential element of emotional intelligence... Well, emotional intelligence is something that we must built and develop in ourselves and our children!
