Dr. Michio Kaku is a theoretical physicist and is becoming well known in pop-culture. I am finishing up his most recent book The Furture of the Mind and have highlighted a few quotes that stuck out to me. The first one really confirmed some ideas I have already expressed concerning self-identification and congitive thought control (and subsequent free-will). Before I give the first quote, I simply need to recommend reading this book. The futuristic concepts are amazing, but he also goes in depth about the current understanding of neurological processes which are as equally as amazing. He clearly did his homework referring to numerous independent research projects, neurologists, well established organizations etc. The concept of I, as a single, unified whole making all decisions continuously, is an illusion created by our own subconcious minds.......the intuitive feeling we have that theres an executive I that sits in a control room of our brain, scanning the screens of the senses and pushing the buttons of our muscles, is an illusion. Consciousness turns out to consist of a maelstrom of events distributed across the brain. These events compete for attention, and as one process outshots the others, the brain rationalizes the out-come after the fact and concots the impression that a single self was in charge all along.
