Dr. Moench came to Fairbanks last weekend. Heres a short YouTube version of what we learned. If youre not from here, what happens in winter is we get inversions which trap cold air (and pollutants) close to the ground, under warmer air. This can last for weeks. And, when it gets cold (-20 to -50 degrees below) water vapor from all sorts of burning & breathing freezes, creating ice fog which, combined with the smoke, makes life nearly unbearable. Citizens for Clean Air and Citizens for Clean Air - No on Prop 2 are working toward local voices and local solutions. Prop 2 is advocating for State intervention, which isnt happening, and soon the EPA will be forced to come in. Prop 2 proponents are saying that the gas line will solve our problems, slated for 2016 or later. BUT, citizens who are burning wood irresponsibly (because its cheap, because theyre overwhelmed by life) arent going to be the ones to plop down $2,000 to $20,000 to convert their cabins and homes. We need solutions, now!
