Dr. Mukesh Hariawala is a national award winning and internationally acclaimed celebrity Indian American Cardiac Surgeon, Research Scientist & Healthcare Economist. He has received an award in June titled “Indian Healthcare Visionary of the Decade”. This award was given to him by the 4th Annual Business Leadership Conclave at Hotel Leela in Mumbai for his keynote presentation on Indian’s medical tourism future. Dr. Hariawala has carefully planned a “100 Billion dollar Medical Tourism” plan that he believes will greatly benefit India. President Obama’s Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare is the reason for this. Obamacare was passed in 2010 and will drastically change American healthcare. Currently, there is a “No Waiting Periods” form of healthcare government but this will soon change. Dr. Hariawala believes India will flourish because with the new Obamacare, medical costs will rise and so will these wait periods. He estimates the cost in India to be around 10% of the cost of a procedure in the United States. Not only is healthcare cheaper but India has highly talented skilled doctors, nurses and an infrastructure. For India, not only will it benefit from medical tourism revenue but it will also impact the hospitality, travel, lodging, food, tourism, banking industries and the shopping sectors along with many more. All this revenue will also encourage developers to invest in building more advanced hospitals in metropolitan cities. This boom would open employment for thousands of semi-skilled workers. Based on Dr. Hariawala ambitious predictions, India will be a great medical tourism destination.
