Dr. Peter McGuire from the NIH presenting at the Fatty Acid - TopicsExpress

Dr. Peter McGuire from the NIH presenting at the Fatty Acid Oxidation disorders conference on the immune system and metabolic disorders. New findings from the MINI study: not only does infection tax the body, but both infection and the immune system response actually inhibit metabolism. For example, cytokines, which the immune system cells use to communicate with one another, can inhibit the enzymes used to break down toxins such as ammonia. In addition, T-cells need fatty acid oxidation to function, especially memory T-cells; patients with fatty acid oxidation defects often lose immune memory. The MINI study continues to recruit patients with IEMs and mitochondrial disorders.
