Dr. Pratt - My husband has Cancer and cant sleep and I know it lowers his immune system not sleeping, so is it better he takes sleeping pills every night? Absolutely NOT! Yes sleep is very important for not only a strong immune system but for healing and repairing as well. But taking sleeping pills increases more Cancer! According to a study of over 10,000 patients who took sleeping pills compared to 20,000 patients who did not take sleeping pills. The ones who took sleeping pills nightly were causing early death for many of the patients. In addition, those who averaged only 132 sleeping pills per year were 35% more likely to develop a new cancer. (Daniel F. Kripke, MD) So whats the answer! First check to see is your bedroom set up for good sleep: 1. Make sure there is COMPLETE darkness. No light from anywhere even the smallest light from an alarm clock. 2. Keep the room temperature below 70 degrees. Studies show that the optimal room temperature for sleep is quite cool, between 60 to 68 degrees F. 3. Check your bedroom for electro-magnetic fields (EMFs). These can disrupt your pineal gland and the production of melatonin and serotonin, and may have other negative effects as well. Turn off your wi-fi at night, no TV, no cell phones near the bedroom and even alarm clocks can give off EMFs. 4. Take a hot bath, shower or sauna before bed. When your body temperature is raised in the late evening, it will fall at bedtime, helping sleep. The temperature drop from getting out of the bath signals your body its time for bed. If these fail to help take: Melatonin. Ideally it is best to increase levels naturally with exposure to bright sunlight in the daytime and absolute complete darkness at night. If that isnt possible, you may want to consider a melatonin supplement. In studies, melatonin has been shown to increase sleepiness, help you fall asleep more quickly and stay asleep, decrease restlessness, and reverse daytime fatigue.
