According to the American Optometric Association: Optometrists routinely diagnose and frequently treat patients who present with glaucoma. Glaucoma ranks as a leading cause of blindness among vulnerable populations with access to optometry services, including African Americans, 40 years and older, in the U.S. A comprehensive eye examination provided by a Doctor of Optometry includes a series of tests that form the basis of a clinical diagnosis of glaucoma, all used to inform a treatment plan. In addition to the optometric comprehensive eye examination, at the discretion of the doctor of optometry (optometrist) he or she may perform, 1) gonioscopy (the use of a goniolens in conjunction with a slit lamp to gain a view of the anatomical angle between the eye’s cornea and iris), 2) serial visual field testing, 3) serial tonometry, 4) optical coherence tomography (noninvasive, noncontact, transpupillary imaging technology which can image cross-sectional retinal structures through a technique described by confocal scanning laser tomography), scanning laser polarimetry (the use of polarized light to measure the thickness of the retinal nerve fiber layer), 5) corneal pachymetry (the process of measuring the thickness of the cornea) and, 6) blood pressure, among other tests depending on a person’s age and other risk factors, to constitute the specific glaucoma workup. The science and evidence supports the comprehensive eye examination and glaucoma specific workups as the methodology for “diagnosis” of glaucoma, all of which can be conducted a Doctor of Optometry.
