Dr. Sarah Ballantyne on the role of nutrient deficiencies and autoimmunity: So one of the other huge concepts with autoimmune disease is nutritional deficiencies. So we understand that deficiencies in basically every nutrient that has a role in the immune system, which is most of the nutrients, have been found in autoimmune diseases. Zinc deficiency is probably the most studied, vitamin D deficiency, vitamin A deficiency, certain B vitamin deficiencies, other mineral deficiencies like magnesium and iron. We see these in autoimmune disease, and we even have studies that show that if you supplement with some of these you can actually make symptoms better in autoimmune disease. So that’s an amazing intersection with digestive health, because if you have a leaky gut, if you have stressed out gut epithelial cells—the cells that line the gut—they’re not doing their job of absorbing nutrients very well, so then you end up perpetuating those nutritional deficiencies, even once you start focusing your diet on more nutrient-dense foods.” The rest of her presentation is live today on the Autoimmune Summit, along with four other talks on natural solutions to autoimmune disease--to access, sign up for free here: autoimmune-paleo/autoimmunesummit
