Dr. W’s Reflections, Ramblings, and Rants... THE LAMB OF GOD (John 1:29-34) “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” As the “Lamb of God,” Jesus Christ is the One–and only One–who can provide a solution to the sin problem that we, as human beings, all face in this present world of experience (cf., Rom 3:10, 23). Throughout the Bible story, we learn that the salvation of God has always required the shedding of blood (Heb 9:22). And whether it was the Passover story (Exodus 12) or the system of sacrifices that Israel was instructed to offer (Leviticus 1-7), we learn that–when dealing with issues of sin and guilt–the blood of a lamb was offered as a substitute for the guilty person in order to seek “atonement” for sin, i.e., to make things right with God. And so, the “good news” proclaimed by John is this: Jesus, as the “Lamb of God,” offered himself–his body and blood for us–as a sacrifice of atonement for our sins. This means he paid the price for the punishment of death that we all deserve because of our own sin. So, instead of us having to die to atone for our own sins, Jesus offered himself in our place (Matt 20:28; cf., 1 John 2:2; 4:9-10; 1 Pet 2:24; 3:18; 2 Cor 5:21; Eph 1:7; Heb 9:27-28). On the Cross, Jesus became our Passover Lamb and we are saved by his blood. Jesus has taken away our sin; his blood was the means necessary to satisfy everything that is wrong about us so that everything can now be made right with God. Therefore, He is worthy of our praise (Rev 5:12)!
