Dr. W’s Reflections, Ramblings, and Rants... THE LORD’S PRAYER – 4 “Give us today our daily bread” (Matt 6:11). The journey of faith is all about learning to trust God. Israel learned how to trust God in the wilderness because, with each new day, God rained down “bread” from heaven (Exod 16:4). In feeding the 5,000 with just five loaves and two fish, Jesus declared himself to be the “bread of life” (John 6:35). And with the twelve baskets of abundance that was collected following our Lord’s dinner party, the message of Jesus was clear: If you trust me, then I’ll take care of you. Therefore, to pray, “Give us today our daily bread,” means we trust God to provide our everyday needs (cf., Matt 6:25-34). When we pray this petition, we learn to express our dependence on God–not just for what we eat, drink, and wear, but for everything else too. In our journey of faith, the message of Jesus remains clear: If you trust me, then I’ll take care of you.
