Dr. Zamenhof, addressing the second World Congress of Esperanto, Geneva, 1906: "We are not as naive as some people think we are; we do not believe that a neutral [interlingual] foundation will make human beings angels; we know quite well that the bad people will still be bad afterwards; but we believe that communication and mutual acquaintance on a neutral foundation will do away with a large part of those beastly acts and crimes which are caused not by ill will, but simply by lack of awareness and by coerced intrusion. (Roughly; not sure if an "official" English version exists.)
