Dr Zia ud Din Ahmad, one of the pioneering Islamic economists and the first Director General of International Institute of Islamic Economics at International Islamic University Islamabad, passed away yesterday. He was one of the few personalities at IIIE I idolised as a young undergraduate student at IIUI. A PhD from Harvard, he had been a Deputy Governor at State Bank of Pakistan before accepting to be DG of IIIE. I was really impressed by his command on English language and the ease with which he would speak, when invited to do so, on the topics related with Islamic economics, banking and finance. He wrote numerous articles and books during his illustrious career but was not active academically during last 10 years due to poorly health. I agreed many times with his son, Furqan Ahmad (to whom I offer my condolences on the sad occasion of his fathers loss), to include an interview with Dr Zia ud Din Ahmad (similar to what we included by Dr Nejatullah Siddiqi in GIFR 2014) but this was not destined to happen. May Allah forgive the departed soul and accept his good deeds and grant him the best place in the heavens.
