Draft Media Release Yabbering (Working Title)) Wellington History - TopicsExpress

Draft Media Release Yabbering (Working Title)) Wellington History Project “The bringing them home” team Jody Chester and Ray West, from the Wellington Aboriginal Corporation are currently undertaking a historical photographic project, called “Yabbering” meaning story teller. This project will be with the assistance of our young up and coming graphic designer/photographer Jacob Forrest who will be designing and formatting the production of a CD Rom and catalogue of the Wellington local Aboriginal history. The importance of putting this together and transferring our history from the old photographic memories once kept in an album and pulled out at the family gatherings, to modern information and technology will ensure the preservation of our history along with accessibility and appeal to our younger new technological generation. This medium will allow and give us the opportunity to share our history with our kids and tell their family’s stories behind those images. So if you would like to share some of your images and stories, please do, it is something special to leave your children and grand children. I too grew up in the city and recall researching my own family’s history and was shocked at what limited information that was available on the Wellington Aboriginal families, then and not much has changed after living here for the past 14 years. The alarming concern here is that Wellington was impacted by colonization in the earlier period, this side of the Blue Mountains and little information is available. Well its time to change that. My memories of my visit to the local Museum back in 1990, was an old photograph of Mudgee Phillips, who originated from Queensland, a map of Nanima and one old breast plate. I was disappointed and remembering the quotes on a T-shirts worn at the Bicentennial Protest March in Sydney in 1988 reading “Australia has a Black History”, but why is it not included. It’s time to share that history and be included. The impacts of colonisation, which is evident as a result of past Government policies with the forced removals and stolen generations, a large number of our people have been displaced and marginalised with too many still trying to locate their families, this information is imperative so we can help those Aboriginal people still in search of their mobs. We are inviting anyone with any valuable historical image/s to bring them forward to enable a broad representation of the lives and families from Wellington, NSW and make these available for everyone. It’s time to share our stories and teach our children about, their families and their history. This will be resourceful information for future stolen generation clients in bringing them home. We know there is information out there whether you are in Sydney, Dubbo, Perth, Brisbane or Tasmania if you have anything to be contributed you are warmly invited to contact Jody Chester or Ray West on 02 68 452565.
