DragonCon Report Part 2: Panels Like many long-time con-goers, - TopicsExpress

DragonCon Report Part 2: Panels Like many long-time con-goers, I do not typically attend many panels. I tend to reserve my energy and tolerance for crowds for other activities. However, there are a couple of things I always try to make time for. I first met my friend Michael K Leneski when he was running the old Whose Line is it Anyway? panel/contest at con. Ive had a deep and abiding love of improv for many years, so I kept showing up and eventually, we got close. Then he started doing what I can only really describe as a long, late-night, exchange your childhood innocence for fabulous prizes! panel called Son of... and a legacy was born. If Im at con, people know that Ill be busy on Saturday nights, because Im at Son of.... Mike has all sorts of amazing contacts that have let him gather a mind-blowing assortment of prizes (and candy) to give away. And give away he does. Im not exactly sure what the retail cost of everything was, but this year it included three almost complete Cards Against Humanity sets (the main set, all four expansions, the 90s nostalgia pack, all three Crabs Adjust Humidity packs, a pack of blank Crabs Adjust Humidity cards, and a Bigger, Blacker Box) and a big plastic tub crammed full of DVDs. He also had more DVDs, anime con passes, and 6-month Crunchyroll memberships that he gave out at two other panels he was running. For a mild example of the sort of brain-twisting involved, look up Rejected on YouTube (assuming youre not already familiar with it). Thats generally in the first hour or so of the panel. The other panels he ran were also good. He did a live version of his every-so-often podcast, With Special Guest and had four voice actors answering questions about the profession and the industry that its a part of. He also did a game show called Line Em Up with the help of his improv troupe, Laugh Out Loud at UGA. (The guys also did an opening thing for the Son Of... event.) Im hoping that it helps generate more people poking the con to get some improv back, as are they. Regardless, I got a LOT of stuff during the various panels, including one of the CAH sets. A few things I gave away (like a copy of Natsumes Book of Friends Seasons 1&2 Premium Edition, because I already had a copy from last year and didnt want to be a prize hog, and a copy of the first 13 episodes of FMA: Brotherhood to one of my new friends because shed never seen it and, again, I had a LOT of stuff) and one thing...well, it would have been tough to get the CAH set home due to the size of it and I dont exactly have people nearby I can play with. And a set like that needs to be used, not horded. So...I gave it to David who, as I mentioned in my first post, has been my host as well as my friend and has a bunch of people to play board and card games with. I know it will be put to horrible use that way. :) So thats my panels experience for this year. More later.
