Dragons outduel Strother to stay unbeaten district play Darius Mack totals 242 yards and 4 TDs in Dewar’s 40-22 victory By LARRY OWEN Okmulgee Times DEWAR - The Dewar Dragons remained atop the B-4 district standings last Friday after earning a 40-22 win over the visiting Strother Yellowjackets. The Dragons are currently 2-0 in district play and are tied for first with the unbeaten Wetumka Chieftains. Strother entered last Friday’s district showdown sporting a perfect 2-0 record and featured one of the top rushers in Class B in senior Kaleb Kurley. In the first two games of the 2013 season, Kurley had totaled 599 yards rushing on 60 carries and had crossed the end zone a total of 14 times. Last Friday, Kurley put up his second-best rushing total of the season with 231 yards on 33 carries and scored all three of Strother’s TDs. While Kurley was clearly the top performer for Strother, the sophomore combination of QB Alan Bentjen and tailback Darius Mack were better, combining for 413 of the Dragons’ 431 yards rushing and accounted for all five TDs. Mack led the way with a season-high 242 yards rushing on 20 carries and 4 TDs, which was 11 yards better on 10 less carries than Kurley. In last week’s district showdown with the Yellowjackets, the Dragons jumped out to a huge 3-touchdown lead in the second quarter and held off a late fourth-quarter rally by Strother to come away with the double-digit decision. Dewar opened the scoring in the first quarter with a 38-yard run by Bentjen. Bentjen then connected with Colt Taylor for the conversion to give the Dragons the early 8-0 advantage. Mack would score the first of his four TDs in the first period on a 20-yard run. Bentjen would then find Ethan Been on the conversion to double the Dragons’ lead to 16-0 at the end of the first 12 minutes of action. The first score of the second quarter would come on a 16-yard scamper by Mack. Bentjen then crossed the goal line for the conversion to increase the Dewar lead to 24-0. Strother would find the end zone for the first time in the contest in the second quarter, as Kurley scored from 13 yards out. The run attempt on the conversion try was no good, making it a 24-6 Dewar lead. The host Dragons would close out the first half scoring by recording a safety, as the Dewar defense was able to tackle the punter in the end zone for two points and a 26-6 halftime lead. Mack would account for the lone score in the third quarter. The sophomore tailback would race 24 yards to paydirt to extend the Dewar lead to 32-6 after three quarters of play. Kurley would reach the end zone for a second time in the contest for Strother, this time on a 6-yard run. Kurley then plowed his way across the goal line on the conversion to make it a 32-14 contest. Mack would put the finishing touches on his 4-TD night with a 48-yard score later in the fourth. Bentjen then connected with Brandon Tiger on the conversion to push the Dewar lead to 40-14. Kurley’s 24-yard run and Sawyer Marquis conversion run would make the final outcome 40-22, Dewar. Mack would finish with a season-high 242 yards on 20 carries and 4 TDs, followed by Alan Bentjen with 25 carries for 171 yards and one score. Kickoff for Friday’s district meeting with Bowlegs is set for 7:30 p.m. at Bison Stadium. --- Dewar 40, Strother 22 Stro - 0 - 6 - 0 - 16 (22) Dew - 16 - 10 - 6 - 8 (40) First Quarter Dewar - Alan Bentjen, 38-yard run (Colt Taylor pass from Bentjen) Dewar - Darius Mack, 20-yard run (Ethan Been pass from Bentjen) Second Quarter Dewar - Mack, 16-yard run (Bentjen run) Strother - Kaleb Kurley, 13-yard run (Run Failed) Dewar - Safety (punter tackled in end zone) Third Quarter Dewar - Mack, 24-yard run (Pass Failed) Fourth Quarter Strother - Kurley, 6-yard run (Kurley run) Dewar - Mack, 48-yard run (Brandon Tiger pass from Bentjen) Strother - Kurley, 24-yard run (Sawyer Marquis run) Team Stats First Downs: Strother 14; Dewar 14 Rushing: Strother 47-249; Dewar 50-431 Passing: Strother 3-7-2 58; Dewar 7-14-0 49 Total Yards: Strother 307; Dewar 480 Penalties: Strother 8-80; Dewar 8-70 Fumbles: Strother 0-0; Dewar 1-0 Individual Stats Rushing: Darius Mack 20-242, 4 TDs; Alan Bentjen 25-171, TD; Ethan Been 2-9; Mekko Watson 3-9.
