Drama and Politcs, Part IV: Ukraine and Russia -- 4.02.2014, Payman Akhlaghi (Draft 4) -- The events of late February and afterwards in Ukraine played out smoothly like a brand new scenario before an international audience by manipulating their craving for suspense and their addiction to drama. It somehow felt as if journalists, even some leaders, just sat there and waited to see Russias next surprise move. Of course, the interim government in Ukraine was unusually weak; Russia perhaps had the detailed plan shelved for such a day; and a hasty intervention might have led to a loss of lives. Still, its conceivable that some timely warning, and a few right steps by the West, could have seized away the initiative and prevented the absurd script to unfold in full. But then, I dont have all the pertinent facts or the expertise to judge beyond a laymans observation. What I can see is that, for whatever reason, Russia, more than others, got itself into a regrettably big trouble. If so, despite all appearances, the best solution maybe just to help them find their way out of this puzzle gracefully without getting themselves, and others, into still bigger troubles. The civil world deserves and demands reason and common sense; and that, no doubt, begets reinforcing the peaceful way of dialogue and diplomacy until a viable solution has been produced. In the meantime, the initiative to begin building Ukraine into an example of Western prosperity is probably the outcome of the current crisis. © 2014, Payman Akhlaghi. All rights reserved.
