Drawing: An Academic Approach in Art Making class, the first lesson. The teacher gives us a motivational talk, ‘We artists are shooting for the stars... there are always, you know, people,’ he makes a little expressive gesture as if doodling, ‘drawing little flowers, cats...’ he pauses so we can appreciate the challenge in front of us when suddenly i find myself interrupting the dramatic silence with a loud (and embarrassing) ‘Yes! it’s me right there, a perennial dog painter!’ causing a laughter in the audience. The class continues... I keep thinking about stars (the goal) vs scribbling (the process). Richard Serra once said, ‘There is no way to make a drawing — there is only drawing.‘ Drawing is a verb... Wrong class perhaps?..
