Dreams, the Sleep Language of God Symbols are the peculiar language of dreams. Some symbols have universal meanings, some have tribal or social meanings, some are distinctive to nations, localities, and cultures. Each individual has his own set of meanings. Many symbols have double meanings. For example, the lion stands for royalty, and for destructive carnal violence. If a man is walking with the Lord Jesus Christ, then the Lion of Judah (Rev. 5:5) is his strength, authority, dignity and courage. If he walks apart from God, the devil comes like a roaring lion seeking a prey (1 Peter 5:8). A serpent on a pole symbolizes healing (Num. 21:8-9) and bears a striking resemblance to the caduceus, a pagan symbol that is an emblem of the medical profession. But that ancient serpent and dragon who is the devil also appears from Gen. 3 to Revelation 20. Chains stand either for those negative things that bind us, or for the bonds of love which make us prisoners that we may be free indeed. The axe or the knife either cut to the root in friendly fashion, or wield death. The sword is two-edged to separate for God, or brings wounding.
