Driver Safety Tips Sheriff Ralph Kersey would like to remind citizens to be cautious and defensive drivers. As we are in the age of technology, we realize that there are several things that could distract us while we are operating our motor vehicles. Many of our citizens have GPS Devices, mini computers, cell phones with several advanced capabilities, IPods and other musical devices that may take our eyes and attention off of driving. When operating these devices while driving we increase the chances of impairing our response time to traffic accident or road maintenance. Sheriff Kersey recognizes that other distractions may as well occur in the vehicle such as, unrestrained children, animals, and other passengers. Drivers are encouraged to keep distractions at a minimum while operating a motor vehicle. When you become distracted often times you are startled if the flow of traffic changes, you may miss a traffic light or other traffic signs, or you could make a sudden lane change or wrong turn. This type of behavior can place your safety, your passenger and other motorists’ safety in danger. Sheriff Kersey asks citizens to perform these basic safety tips while operating a motor vehicle: • If you need to make a phone call or send someone a text message, please pull to a safe location off of the roadway. • If you need to take a call and are unable to pull in a safe, well-lit area, we ask that you use a hands-free device. • When using a GPS device, familiarize yourself with how it works and try not to make any changes to the device while traveling on the roadway. • Avoid changing the music on your IPod or other music devices while traveling on the road, change the music before operating the motor vehicle or wait until you come to a complete stop. We encourage all of our citizens to be safe and responsible drivers.
