Driver makes U-turn and then rams into female runners PETALING JAYA: Three female runners were injured when they were hit by a car during a charity fun run in Bandar Utama. Lim Lee Ling, 43, Lee Shiau Foon, 33, and Lee Su San, 24, were lucky to escape with scrapes and bruises after a car rammed into them at Jalan BU7/1. Witnesses said the driver of the red Proton Iswara did not stop during the 8am incident yesterday. St John Ambulance personnel on duty stabilised the victims before sending them to the University Malaya Medical Centre. According to the race doctor, all three victims were conscious, with one of them complaining of back pain. “Another was giddy and vomited,” he said. Police said traffic wardens were present at the junction where the accident occurred at KM14 of the 15km route. “The wardens allowed the car to make the U-turn and directed it to keep to its lane,” said a police officer from the Kota Damansara traffic branch. “After the car had turned, it suddenly accelerated and entered the runners’ lane and hit the trio.” Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin, who had earlier flagged off the run, revealed the car’s registration number in a tweet. NTV7 group general manager Airin Zainal said the organisers had taken all reasonable precautions to ensure the safety of participants. “Traffic cones were placed on the public road to demarcate the lane for runners, and traffic wardens, as well as traffic policemen, were stationed along the route,’’ he said. Airin said the event was organised by NTV7 as part of its 15th anniversary celebrations. Met at the hospital later, Shiau Foon’s husband, who identified himself only as Chai, told reporters that his wife took part in the 7km category of the race. “She had no broken bones, and got off with minor scrapes,” he said. “She has since been discharged.”TheStar
