If you feel you could make a difference to people like Sarah, wed love to hear from you. Mileage paid - of course! If youre able to help, call Usha here at Torbay Community Development Trust on 01803 212638, or pop into our offices in Torquays Temperance Street. This is an Ageing Well Pilot Transport Project, by the way, to improve the lives of older people living in Torbay. Prince’s Trust ‘Are you aged 16- 25 and at a loss what to do? Unemployed and looking for some direction in life?’ These are the questions the Prince’s Trust team are asking as they offer a programme to help improve confidence while building team-working and problem-solving skills. On the programme, one week residential, participants can gain qualifications in Employment, Teamwork and Community Skills in a course starting on January 12th. ‘It’s a great opportunity,’ they say, ‘to uncover hidden talents, improve motivation, assume responsibility – and have a really good time away from home!’ With advice on cv writing, too, the course aims to make all participants more employable. Always looking to create new dynamic theatre, the South Devon Players are bringing the tale of the dashing Zorro to the stage, in an all-new family production at the Palace Theatre in January. ‘What a way to start the new year!’ they rightly announce. Combining elements of traditional pantomime with the glamour of a Vegas show, ‘Zorro!’ is ‘a high-tech, family friendly, action-packed production to delight young and old alike.’ The show features an all-local cast with an age range of over 60 years between the youngest and the eldest, all of whom have worked together to create, they tell us, ‘An amazing new show, filled with laughter, glamour, high-tech effects, swordplay, music, dance, and even a catwalk fashion show.’ In the story, the Californian town of Torbaymuda is home to the handsome and evil Capistrano, the local mayor, who also runs the local school. Afraid only of his mother, Bertha (an ex-army sergeant major and now self-styled supermodel), Capistrano rules Torbaymuda with terror, and with the aid of the beautiful witch Luciana, who has her own plans for domination - first Torbaymuda, then the rest of the world. Capistrano and Luciana have designs to steal the pirate treasure discovered by a tribe of local hippies and surfers, led by their “witch doctor”, Gary. But! They’ve reckoned without the fearless champion swordsman, Zorro - the hidden identity of the apparently bumbling school geography teacher who lives in fear of his own students! As many of you will know, South Devon Players are an award-winning, not-for-profit theatre company, specialising in shows themed on historical events, classics, and legends. They rehearse at Chestnut Community Centre on Wednesday evenings and Sunday afternoons. Most of their main shows are performed at the Palace Theatre, but they’re are looking at expanding to Brixham Theatre and maybe one or two others in the coming year. They dont charge annual membership but instead each member contributes £1 per rehearsal, which covers rehearsal hall rent. ‘You’re considered a member as soon as you are cast in a show or working on the backstage crew for one,’ they tell us, ‘and once you have proven reliable as a member we add you to our careers’ development facebook group where we share local and national casting calls for film, theatre, modelling and any local training courses - a free perk to our members who want to develop a career related to the performing arts.’ The last few months have seen all sorts of exciting developments, including filming for Channel 5, being visited by the Britains Got Talent scouts, and performing in an international opera. In the past they’ve also worked with the BBC, Disney, Smithsonian, ITV, and Sky TV. With a range of people from those new to acting through to semi-professionals and trained performers, ‘everyone works together,’ they say, ‘to produce a good show, and a pleasant supportive team.’ For more on the Players contact southdevonplayers@gmail or to book tickets for January 30th or 31st call 01803 665800 or visit palacetheatrepaignton.co.uk Christmas Tree Festival Now in its twelfth year, the Christmas Tree Festival at Torre’s All Saints Church meant a wonderful display of some forty brightly sparkling trees. Each had been decorated by a different local community group or voluntary organisation, from Friends of Factory Row to Anode, from Animal Voices to the Quakers, with impressive contributions from Torre School and the church’s own Organ Fund. Opened on a crisp December afternoon by a celebrity guest, Santa Claus himself, and with mulled wine and mince pies on offer, it was a delightfully seasonal event – and a well attended one, too!
