Driving Tip of the Day. November 23, 2013. Driver Boy remembers the time when a kid would have his head out the window (well yes, dogs too) or was doing hand waves (delivered quite differently today) and eventually the fun was taken away, sure because of safety issues like stones being kicked up, and into windows, road objects and flying debri. It probably has saved many lives, the inception of(circa 1972) the act prohibiting windows from being lowered more than 50%. Some foreign mfg. got away with full crank down rear side windows, Mercedes, etc., and, unfortunately, did not prevent full face exposure, thus creating part II of this true story, and tip of the day. Part II-------this was unplanned until authoring of this piece began. I say this because (Driver Boy) enjoys the background distraction of TV. and co-incidentally the ER channel being not only entertaining, but informative, as the presentation is of truth, not drama. Just as I was about to test you, if anybody knows exactly when the laws changed to allow the windows full recess again the picture changes from commercial to the image of a girl, about 12-13 with a tie rod piercing her temple and ocular nerve. I find this out as they describe that she was full face into the wind of the right rear window. The outcome is she lived. Having witnessed small rocks coming into the car I was driving and numerous other bad situations with the windows down at highway speeds, I have elected to allow only breathing air for windows when needed. If one has need of air flow, usually a claustrophobic condition, most modern, or newer cars have great air flow systems. Place your face in front of a vent. It is not likely you will be struck by a rock, or a tie rod. Oh, and Driver Boy asked if you would slow down.
