Driving on a bus with her boyfriend through Mexico City, Frida Kahlos life was permanently altered at the age of 18. The bus collided with a speeding trolley leaving several dead at the scene and Frida impaled with a metal rod- through one hip and out from her genital area. Suffering traumatic injuries to her entire body, for the next several years she lay in a full body cast in her beloved childhood home, Casa Azule. Upon her request, her father installed a mirror onto her canopy bed and thus-Frida the painter came to be. Many of her early works were self portraits depicting the utter agony she suffered throughout those early years. The physical pain never ceased throughout her 47 years and was magnified by her bodies inability to bare a child. Namely, the child of her sacred, Diego Rivera.
