Driving to the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge recently, I passed - TopicsExpress

Driving to the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge recently, I passed through Austwell, Texas which sits on the eastern shore of San Antonio Bay, below the Guadalupe Rivers mouth. One of the saddest sights is the shuttered brick elementary school house and playgrounds. This marks the death nell of a community, that there are not enough children to keep the school open. How long will such a community survive? Ask the people of Collegeport, Tx, on the northern shore of Carankawa Bay. It once had schools. It once had a religious college. Long ago. Today it survives as an agricultural community with a few upscale estates and homes at the end of narrow paved roads. A single church, and a museum to once was. I hate it that rural schools, rural communities are in decline. They reflect the heart of American values of industry, neighborly relations, self-reliance.
