Drop in Antique’s veggies supply seen SAN JOSE, Antique – Due to super typhoon “Yolanda,” the supply of vegetables in Antique might drop in the coming weeks, warned agri-business coordinator Betty Baldevia of the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist. “Limited supply is expected for papaya, bananas, sweet potatoes and other locally-grown vegetables,” she said. As to the cost of vegetables like cabbage, carrots and Baguio beans, Baldevia said their prices in the coming weeks will be affected by their transportation cost, considering the conditions of roads and bridges also affected by the typhoon. Previously, Assistant Provincial Agriculturist Concepcion Cepe expressed optimism that farmers can recover soonest, especially those growing vegetables. In three to six months, vegetables can grow and supply can normalize, she stressed. Cepe encouraged the farmers to plant more vegetables, citing the demand in high for these. Meanwhile, the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA) is doubling its effort in monitoring the supply and prices of vegetables, after a reported P1,931,000 damage in vegetable crops brought about by the recent typhoon. The OPA is conducting a weekly monitoring at San Jose Trade Town, the province’s bagsakan of agri-products from various suppliers both local and from other parts of the country. It noted a P5 to P20 increase per kilo in the prices of vegetables like ampalaya, eggplant, string beans, squash and tomatoes. (PIA-Antique/PN) ~angel~
