Drum Corps Part II..we were very young (12-13)when the interest hit me and my closest friend to join the local Drum and Bugle Corp (Continental Cadets) firstly I chose the bugle with a desire to learn how to play it and be a big part of the corps success..however this became very short-lived..after a few weeks as a stiff upper lip and my parents constantly hollering "evie, shut that bugle up." it was time to turn the instrument in and chose something else to do..and that is when I felt carrying the American Legion flag was perfect for me..it was heavy the pole was 6 feet..the flag was pure wool and this was to be carried in summer heat..but I did it..and it worked, I became a very good flag carrier..we had to march in unison, this was something to be conquered, I did, but not after a few mishaps..I remember one competition that while walking across the field with a judge in my face, the flag became entangled around the plume in my helmet..with that I became blind to where I was going, and with that folks, the whole group turned to go in one direction and Evelyn continued in the same direction until I walked off the field..laughter could be heard around the world it seemed to me.but I too laughed..we did get .5 pt off of the score for this mishap but they felt it was due to accidental circumstances nto my intentional fault..I loved my years in Drum Corps, we had the best of times, crushes on the older players, long bus rides from one city to the other, the joy of competing, the tears of losing, the laughter well into the night..it was a great time for all of us..even today when I meet up with one of the members we reminisce about it..I had put an album together but lost it over the years..e+
