Drum lessons from Ants: Have you ever watched an ant walk across the ground with a grain of sand in its jaws? You might have wondered how in the world it will ever get anywhere carrying that large thing. But he marches on, wavering and wobbling until he reaches his destination. You probably know where Im going with this. Once you see a large ant hill, youre then amazed at how such small creatures can build something so impressive. Youll see this same dynamic with how birds build their nests with one little twig at a time and of course there are many other examples. There is a great lesson in this. It is about inspiration. It is about working hard. It is about resolve. It is about doing what you have to do to get the job done. Most importantly, its about the value and joy of the finished product, knowing that you worked very hard to build it and of course how fulfilling and useful it is once its done. There is one more lesson in this. The lesson of not quitting when the chips are down. We will sometimes have failures along our journey. If you have ever seen an ants nest destroyed (perhaps your kid brother kicked it over), youll notice that if you come back a day or two later, the nest is rebuilt. They simply build it all over again! So, we can learn great lessons from nature. Lessons that go beyond how to perfect a paradiddle or how to play a songo. We can learn how to work hard and how to pick ourselves back up when we fall down. The ants will show us how its done!
