Drummers, I believe that there are different phases of development as a musician. In the beginning, there is a big emphasis on technique and analyzing, etc. This is the left-brain at work. Then theres the CREATIVE side: listening, interacting, composing, improvising: the RIGHT brain at work. I feel there are a lot of drummers still stuck in the left-brain (analyzing) instead of transitioning to the right-brain. In order to become more creative, you must WORK on being creative. You must put down the books and PLAY. Left-brain is like hitting balls at the batting cage. Right-brain is like playing baseball. No one cares how well you can hit in a cage (technique) if you cant actually play the game (music with a band). I will expand on this concept from my Modern Drummer Magazine educational piece entitled Big Picture Drumming NEXT Saturday in Jersey City. Tickets are going fast and space is LIMITED
