Dtrax on CROMLY NETWORK COMMUNITY Designer in Focus: DTrax Team This team can take on any challenges in the corporate interior design industry. By Samantha Echavez / 03 March 2014 Vivacity. This word invites images of open and easy conversations, unstoppable positive force, and sunny Singapore days. This word, believe it or not, best describes a fast-growing corporate interior design company, which holds office in the bustling and busy Anson Road. The youthful energy of its designers and partners is so palpable it’s no wonder clients have entrusted their businesses to them. Established in 2003, D’Trax has taken on projects in corporate interior design, project management, space planning, and construction. Its catalogue of clients (Coca Cola, SMU, Axis Offshore, among others) is impressive and tells so much about its stellar reputation. Cromly chatted up with D’Trax’s managing directors and designers and discovered 7 reasons this 11-year-old company has soldiered its way to the top. D’Trax always believes, “It can be done.” When D’Trax won the Wing Tai Retail project, Doris Lim, project manager, was tasked to complete a 44,000 sq feet project. “We’re only given three months to complete. Things must move according to the schedule,” Doris recalls. True to D’Trax’s philosophy of getting things done, Doris completed the project on time. “It showed the capability and commitment of Dtrax as a small company…that a team like ours can do so much in such a short span of time,” says Karen Mayer, senior marketing manager. You could say that the Wing Tai Retail was with the services DTrax rendered. “If our client is satisfied with our work, it will become a repeat business… that’s what we’ve been doing [for the past 11 years,” says Doris. Her dedication to manage the massive Wing Tai project for only three months is a concrete example of D’Trax’s commitment and dedication to its clients. D’Trax is all about strengthening relationships and building networks.“We have an ongoing collaboration with our client companies . We basically stress on relationships, like our relationship with GKN. We always have to bring in something new to the table and ensure that they are happy with the outcome,” says Ei Hon Wong, senior designer. Karen adds, “We have repeat projects, because they recommend us to their business counterparts. That’s a good feeling, for clients to refer you. In D’Trax, human relationships and how you network are important.” Design is paramount. Design is still king, and D’Trax knows it. Jorge Autor Talle, the design manager who worked with the Vita Coco and Liberty Commodities Asia projects, challenging workspaces to work on,explains why most designs D’Trax implements are minimalist: “The reason for that is because we’re in a corporate business. The more we make the design simple and functional, the more it will adapt to whatever color schemes and color standard the client uses. If it’s clean, simple, sleek, then we are able to cater for those corporate standards. The result is a design specific for our client. A simple, timeless design.” D’Trax designers and partners welcome the challenge of building and designing a corporate workspace. What can you do with a 20,000 sq-ft bare layout? How can you make a functional office appear out of that? For Jayne Ong, manager, the challenge they love the most about corporate interior design is space planning. She expounds, “The client gives you a requirement, this space, and you have to think where is the reception, where is the workstation area. So you have to think about these things like divisions, HR, accounts or other places with confidential data. There are feasibility studies—you have to decide on the space. On top of that, you also have to think about the design, the color…” It’s that magic of designing that bare space and turning it into a place where people can work with ease, interact comfortably. “Doing everything from conception to realization, that’s the challenging part,” Mayer adds. What D’Trax values: Team work, good energy, camaraderie Jayne recounts how D’Trax was set up: “We’re ex colleagues. Ronald was from the sales team, Doris and I were from the design team. We had the chemistry. Ronald had the idea of setting up the company. We have been together 11 years. We had sweet, sour, bitter times, but we pulled through together.” “I really appreciate both of them in a lot of ways. Working with them for the 11 years…they know my character,” Ronald, the affable and mild-mannered managing director, says. The three have a synergy that translates into good working relationships and excellent outputs. While Ronald takes care of sales and pitching proposals, Doris handles the project managements and Jayne focuses on costing and administration matters. For 11 years, this division of work has worked and given them loyal clients like GKN, which has a relationship with them for the past 10 years. Passion pays off Whether it’s figuring out how to balance natural elements of green nature with the modern technology-rich office with laboratory (the Vita Project) to designing the Liberty Asia Commodities in one of the A-grade buildings in CBD, D’Trax will find ways to meet the requirements of the clients and making sure they exceed their design expectations. This drive to be the best is attributed to the passion and heart of the team members of this small-but-impressive company. After all, being in D’Trax…. “it’s a journey,” says Ronald kindly.
