It is the violence with which the taboo is enforced. The American State Department has found only one conviction for blasphemy in Christian countries, in Greece (which establishes the Greek Orthodox church). The perpetrator is likely to get off lightly for insulting a popular monk. By contrast the same report found 14 alleged blasphemers sentenced to death in Pakistan, and 19 given life sentences.»
