Dual representation is the ability to detect and mentally represent the relation between a symbol and its referent. Its an ability that isnt acquired until the age of three. Until then we tend to make scale errors. We recognise the similarity, but we dont understand that the object represents something else (watch the video). The ability of dual representation is addressed by coaches when they try to change the perception of events in the life of clients.
