Dubai, July 26: The world’s longest Iftar table measuring 1.003 km in length comprising 410 tables 2.44 meters each in length with 1,600 legs and seating 2,000 people in facing rows on Al-Buhaira Corniche walkway in Sharjah, on Friday, was the focus of a Ramadan event that drew thousands of people besides officials from theGuinness Book of World Records. Talal Umar, country head and Sameer Khallouf, project manager for MENA Guinness Book of World Records, the official adjudicators announced the new record which eclipses the previous one by more than adouble of the distance. The Sharjah Ramadan Festival this year covers a wide range of areas and 15 activities including social, religious and cultural heritage and sports events celebrating the values, principlesand customs and traditions of the Emirati society. Khalid Jasim Al-Midfa, director-general of Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority said that Sharjah counts on its reputation as a perfect family tourism destination, attracting more families this time of the year because of discounted hotel room rates and Ramadan and Eid Al-Fitr once again coinciding with the summer holiday season. The special activities andprogram held as part of the Festival cover the cities of Sharjah and Khorfakkan on the East Coast and will continue until August 18. Al-Qasba remains the hub of activity this Ramadan once again attracting the attention ofvisitors and residents with its various religious, recreational and cultural activities, most notably programs like ‘Nour Nour’ campaign and ‘An Oasis of Faith,’ which includes a series of 13 religious lectures in Arabic byeminent Islamic scholars and preachers. The ongoing Ramadan and Eid Fair in Sharjah is also hosting a series of lectures by renowned scholars every Thursday. “Through the lectures every Ramadan we take the faithful on a blessed journey, helping them purify their soul and practice self-sacrifice. This year, we have lined up a series of lectures in different languages, beginning with Shaikh Zafarul Hasan Madni’s Urdu speech,” said Saif Mohammed Al-Midfa, director-general of Expo Center Sharjah. On Thursday Zafarul Hasan Madni will deliver his lecture in Urdu about ‘The price of the Paradise” (Jannat Ki Qeemat), targeting the expatriate population from the sub-continent. The speech will start at 11 p.m. at the conference hall of Expo Center Sharjah. Chosen by Saudi Arabia to be theofficial teacher for Hajj in 2004, India-born Zafarul Hasan Madni has been active in the UAE in thefield of Da’wah for almost 25 years. Other scholars who are taking part in the series include Dr. Mohammed Ghaith Al Ghaith (in Arabic), Ehab Nadir (in English) and Eisa Jaffer (in Tagalog). Underscoring the significance of special events and exhibitions organized by the emirate duringRamadan, Al-Midfa appreciated the initiatives and efforts by government and private sector bodies in the emirate putting together high-end family fun and entertainment fair as well as cultural and religious heritagereflecting the spirituality of the holy month and reviving the memories and Ramadan traditions of ancestors in Sharjah and the UAE. Special promotions and events held as part of the festival offer a diverse shopping experience with various shopping centers, malls and high-end hotels unveiling attractive discounts and promotions in addition to various activities in Ramadan tents across the emirate.
