Dubbo City Council tops at Tourism Awards Dubbo City Council have been named Gold Winners of the Local Government Award for Tourism at the NSW Tourism Awards ceremony held in Sydney on Thursday 27 November 2014. Dubbo Mayor Mathew Dickerson said the award reflects Council’s approach to positioning Dubbo as a desirable destination for tourists to explore the many attractions of the City and as a base for exploring the wider Orana region. “Council has taken a specific approach to marketing Dubbo as a destination and attractions, facilities and services have been planned around this approach. “Investment in facilities such as Caltex Park and Barden Park is enabling Dubbo to host major events and with these events come tourists. Council is also planning for future tourism development in strategic areas such as Wiradjuri Park and the Regional Botanic Gardens. Councillor Dickerson said one of the benefits Dubbo has in attracting tourists is the variety of attractions. “We are fortunate to have the Award winning Taronga Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo and this provides an opportunity to build that attraction and provide additional reasons to stay longer and explore other parts of the City and the region. “This has been achieved through the development of packages and trails such as the Rhino Adventure Trail. Such packages and trails make travelling easier and more efficient with suggested itinerary, travel, accommodation and event tickets and attraction entry all rolled in to one. “These initiatives require the support of local industry partners as well as neighbouring Local Government Areas,” Councillor Dickerson said. “The support Dubbo has from these partners is overwhelming and the overall strategy would not be as successful without them,” he said. “Overall the Award is a credit to Dubbo City Council and demonstrates the success of the strategic approach to tourism which includes investment in high quality facilities, establishing strong networks and a coordinated marketing program.” City of Dubbo: Mayor of Dubbo, Councillor Mathew Dickerson 0418 639 053
