Ducks, Slovak Architecture, trilingual street signs,Žarko Zrenjanin was a Yugoslav partisan who was killed by the Nazis in 1942 at the age of 40, lakes and peace and quiet. Edvard Beneš was a leader of the Czechoslovak independence movement, Minister of Foreign Affairs and the second President of Czechoslovakia from 1935 to 1938 and again from 1940 to 1948. I did Eastern European Studies at Bradford University for four years from 1977 to 1981 and in that little village, Belo Blato, I experienced the whole spirit of that course in one afternoon. Next year on our SOL - Sharing One Language camp in Sremski Karlovci we will definitely return. We have guests from Croatia, Marinko Uremović, Ivana Kirin and Don Bongo, Marinko and Milan have both been with us in Devon and I hope Ivana will make it one day too. Its great that HUPE - Croatian Association of Teachers of English committee members are making the effort to hook up with us on our last day. We also have Michael Harrison coming to see us at lunchtime together with Milica Kovacevic, both people whove been to Devon, Milica on summer courses and this morning Ljubica Jankov will come from Novi Sad. Yesterday it was a delight to see Anica Đokić and Gordana Klasnja, who joined us for our discussion of the film Dead Poets Society. Its this kind of networking that makes it such a joy to work with SOL. Today is the last day of the fifth teacher development course I have been a tutor on this summer, the first with a group of Finnish teachers in Devon in June. Ive learnt a lot and Im looking forward to the next one, whenever that might be. Mr Rakesh Bhanot is still asleep in the bed opposite me, snoring away lightly, the suns shining through the window, the cock has just crowed, we have a boat on the Danube lined up for this morning and Im just a six hour train journey away from Magdi and Ronan, who I will see tomorrow in Budapest. Lifes good!
