Duct-taped Traces of Love Were living in a day when many are overly dependent on electronics. You would think they are unaware that international hackers are capable of knocking out electric grids nationwide. This could take months, even years to rectify. Some technology savvy Christians are shortsighted in that they don’t own old fashion copies of the Word of God. How are those who are dependent on electronics going to feed on the Word, not if, but when electricity is knocked from service? With all of this modern technology, I miss seeing saints carrying crookedly flattened Bibles with tattered page edges to church. I consider my worn Bibles among my closest friends, even though some are held together by strips of duct tape on outer covers and within page bindings. Once when my parents went forward to join a new church, the pastor later confided that one of his dreads was people with Bibles that had swollen dog-earned pages. He didn’t care for the Berean mindset that weighs sermons against the Scriptures. (Acts 17:11) As my folks advanced to leadership positions, the pastor divulged his private motto: It was to keep parishioners babes. He didn’t cotton to the notion of anyone with a duct-taped Bible rocking his boat. My assessment is that his motto was a satanic instrument. Well-worn Bibles put demons on notice that their schemes will be challenged and overcome by believers who have great command of verses that declare Satans doom. In yesteryears, people who counted their philosophies of life and experiences of value to future generations kept daily journals. With many believers, the margins of their Bibles function similarly. Their inspired insights about particular passages; and their prayers and faith confessions are recorded on pages as they feed on God’s Word. I have numerous worn-out, duct-taped Bibles. In a sense, my notes on their pages are a legacy to future generations of my family. Relatives are hesitant to discard this type of heirloom. Some of the richest times that I’ve had in worship were when reading the notes in the Bibles of my deceased father and mother. In my opinion, it’s high time for anyone who doesn’t possess a well read Bible to buy one to start breaking in now. You’ll find it a lasting comfort that Bible programs cannot satisfy. Notes can’t be lost by the purchase of incompatible electronic programs and there are no batteries needed. Hard copy Bibles are tangible and respond instantly whenever taken in hand. I encourage you to invest in a Bible of your favorite version. Read it enough for it to need duct tape. This will give it valuable appearance to the discerning. For them, it can be like phrases adapted from the old song, Traces of Love. “Faded photographs, covered now with lines and creases. Memories in bits and pieces of traces of Gods love, long ago that worked out so right.” Your worn antique Bible has lasting power. It can enlighten future generations of God seekers in your lineage about what made you who you were, and can give them insights about life in Christ that they might not otherwise discover.
