Due to his disability, he was as tall standing as he was sitting, - TopicsExpress

Due to his disability, he was as tall standing as he was sitting, but a visit quickly revealed he is a giant in spirit. I admired the simple complexity of his paintings, muted, minimal colors, few lines that conveyed strong emotions....So I asked as I watched him shading in the reds on the picture of the covered bridge that hung on his easel..you looking at a picture to paint that off of?. He leaned towards me, pointed to his ear. I leaned over to ask my question louder, ARE. YOU. LOOKING. AT. A PICUTRE? His wife explained and he grinned, Hes telling you the picture is in his head, look in there, see if you can see it. I didnt!! Our ensuing visit was one Ill remember for a long time...When I paint I am IN the picture, I feel that Im there. Ive been given a gift and I must share it...When I paint, I am at peace. I motioned towards a stark winter scene... a few tall angular pines, covered in snow..it looked like the bitterest of winter days. I like this one I said, but I dont feel cold and miserable when I see it, I feel like Im looking out, that Im in a cabin, warm, with a quilt, good company and good coffee, a book... He interrupted my musings...theres the roof line, the rest is up to you to imagine. I hadnt noticed, sure enough, hed sketched in a few roof tops in the far background.... Ahhhhh;...there IS my cabin...I got the rest of it, in my head...the warmth, the stillness (I didnt lean over for him to look in my ear,, see if he could see it too. lol ) Not only does he get in the picture himself, when he paints...He can get YOU in the picture when you look at it.. Thats a good artist!!!
