Due to my job and my interests I have had my DNA analyzed by several genetic ancestry companies. One of the fun, and quizzical, aspects of this is that I regularly get emails from individuals whom I have never met or heard from before who happen to have used the same ancestry companies as I. The email usually states that this individual has discovered that he or she and I match at ONE genetic location (among 3 billion base pairs in our genome); thus, they also write that “we are genetically related and share some ancestor in the past.” This kind of thinking involves something more akin to mythology and philosophy instead of actual genetic science.
