Due to the new Statement on Free Expression i think its clear that its a slap in the face to our anti-discrimination efforts especially after their supposed commitment to diversity and such. Moving forward, I think we should talk about the ways in which we do work to clearly establish the line between protected free speech, hate/discriminatory speech, and protected free speech that can STILL be considered hate speech/discriminatory. this statement reveals that although they committed to taking into account student input (i.e. an entirely fleshed out petition with substantiated claims ) they are not going to clearly define disciplinary punishment for discrimination. They are attempting to paint our entire movement as a desire to shield individuals from ideas and opinions they find unwelcome [or] disagreeable and they think that even when we establish actions have been deeply offensive we just have to learn to engage in dialogue and pretend like mocking ones heritage/identity is similar to simply having a different opinion. Newsflash: opinions arent just innocent ideas. They can carry hate. They can carry intent. They can be wielded against people. they are the BASIS of Hatred and oppression. The chances are that Anyone fighting for anti-racism is pretty open-minded given that they challenged everything in society telling them racism is over. We know the different between a difference of opinion and hatred. Apparently, the university thinks reiterating the tenants of free speech is more important than shielding their student from hatred. I told yall this fight aint over. #liabilityofthemind #WeAreHere
