Dueling Paradigms. Joseph Burkes MD This question won’t go away. Why is science not an appropriate paradigm for UFO studies? On a public FB page the following request was made by a self-described “nuts and bolts” investigator for me to “scientifically document an experience with the ETs under their terms of engagement.” I respond thus. If one studies the accounts of the worldwide network of contactees or better yet become personally involved with them as I have, then it becomes apparent that there are many examples of what you would count as “evidence” of a sort of collaboration between contactees (I prefer the term contact activists) and UFO intelligence. The question is however is it scientific evidence? As someone trained in medical science and raised philosophically as a materialist, I would have to say “No.” There is no scientific evidence, nor will there likely ever be any. This is not because there are not abundant examples of UFOs showing up in response to what has been called contact protocols, but rather because science is not an appropriate paradigm. This is true not just for contact work in which experiencers go out into the field to engage flying saucers, but also for any reasonable study of UFOs. Better than science is the “intelligence-counter intelligence model” put forward by Val Germann two decades ago in which one studies UFOs like a professional espionage organization, or perhaps as a criminal investigative unit. The reason why such an approach is superior to science is that professional science doesnt study phenomena driven by an intelligence that is likely not only of superior intelligence compared to the human scientists who might dare to study UFOs, but also because what I imagine might be called “Flying Saucer Central’s” intentionally deceiving both experiencers and investigators alike. Please see the work of John Keel and Dr Jacques Vallee so well summarized in the great man of letters Colin Wilsons Alien Dawn to understand some of these challenges. As one who worked as a political activist in various campaigns during the 1960s thru 1980s (including the civil rights, anti Vietnam War, Farmworkers Union crusades) I like to think of the contactees whether they accept it or not, as agents of influence working for what Dr Vallee in his Messengers of Deception called a higher intelligence agency. We may use the tools of science to study UFOs but like any intelligence officer we should assume that UFO intelligence is not going to offer us on a silver platter the evidence that will satisfy the scientific dictum of reproducibility. They have shown through the high strangeness aspects of their encounters with humans that the ordinary rules of time and space and casualty may not apply to them. They can produce illusions, place false memories into experiencers minds while at the same time facilitating the creation of new religions. If science is to apply, it will be a sociological-psychological investigation that outlines the parameters of the human-UFO relationship. I suspect this will not likely to satisfy “nuts and bolts” investigators, but that is the best that we can do for now in my opinion.
