Dukes Sports Center Saturday: Heather Kiefer twirled 10 1/3 innings of shutout effort and Hannah Hayes highlighted a five-homer afternoon for the Dukes with a grand slam in softballs 11-0, 9-0 sweep of Towson. The Dukes improved to 6-2 in the CAA and 27-11 overall. Chris Huffman went the distance on the mound for the third time this season and Tyler McFarland hit his eighth homer of the year in baseballs 8-3 win that evened the series at Hofstra. Steph Finley drilled five goals and assisted on three others, Emily Rhoads netted a career-high four goals and Schylar Healy made 11 saves as lacrosse opened CAA play with an 18-11 win against visiting William & Mary. Womens tennis had a five-match win streak snapped with a 5-2 loss to College of Charleston. Jacqueline Palmucci and Rachel Christena Nelson accounted for the JMU points with singles victories. Mens tennis was downed by Norfolk State, 6-1. The Dukes lone winner was Brett Moorhead. Track & field freshman Summer Walter and junior Nicole Gilbert moved into the program’s record book with their performances Saturday at the Liberty Collegiate Invitational. Walter took second out of nine athletes with 4,517 points, while Gilbert was fifth with a score of 4,229. Freshman Ebony Owusu-Sampah paced JMU in the horizontal jumps with a pair of top-10 finishes. She was second out of 33 in the long jump with a leap of 5.57 meters and sixth out of 25 in the triple jump with a jump of 11.35 meters. More than 800 JMU students turned out for the first Football Student Appreciation Day, a new event brought to campus by head coach Everett Withers.
